When the receiver becomes the sender…

With the digital development and the new media, companies and organisations today have definitively lost control over their brand and reputation. The power rests with the customers, employees and media – in principle, anybody who has an opinion about one’s brand and wants to publish it.

Simply put, the new media have made it possible for anyone to say everything to everybody.

So what does this mean for you? Three things…

1. Take advantage of the opportunities
First of all, it means that you have many new opportunities. For example, you have more ways to engage with and involve your customers and stakeholders than ever before. You can gain more knowledge about them. And you can target only those that make sense for you.

2. Think carefully
It means that you must think carefully because the new reality has made it crucial to weigh one’s words thoroughly. The new digital and social media mean that everything can be redistributed fast. Every misstep or rash action can be sent out to everyone through Facebook in a matter of few seconds. So it is more important than ever to say the right things. At the same time, it is possible to take advantage of this. Because if you succeed in taking advantage of the fact that anyone who receives your communication can also potentially redistribute your messages, then you can get far.

3. Listen to what is being said
It means that you need to be alert. You need to keep track of your relations. While it was previously common to ask one’s customers about what they think about the organisation or its products once a year, you now need to listen to what they are saying to each other every single day. This is the only way to discover and address potential problems before they develop into actual crises with consequences for your reputation.

It is therefore more crucial than ever to engage in PR and relations. It is not enough to just focus on the immediate receiver. You must always think one step ahead and exploit the fact that your receivers can be a medium in themselves.
